Why Japanese Excites Me
I chose to study Japanese because half of my family is from Japan. However growing up in Singapore, for the majority of my life I have not had any formal Japanese education. Therefore whenever I would go back to Japan, the communication between myself and my grandparents would be very limited. Additionally I visit Japan every year but due to my inability to speak fluently and to read or write at even a basic level, I find it very hard to get around by myself and to explore the depths of Japanese culture. Therefore when I came to Columbia, I decided that access to a world class education it would be best to make the best use of my resources. So in addition to my other interests, I took up Japanese.
I'm most excited about being able to have more meaningful conversations with my grandparents and other Japanese family members. Also, with a stronger foundation I will be able to explore aspects of Japanese culture that interest me without relying on my parents. I can't wait to go to a restaurant and be able to handle my self in Japan!
However Japanese itself is a challenging language. I find it most difficult to adhere to it's grammatical structure which is drastically different from the English language. In addition there are many forms of Japanese characters and memorizing them all can be overwhelming at times.
Although Japanese is challenging, I love the structure of the Japanese classes at Columbia which meet everyday Monday through Thursday. With the continued practice, I hope to develop my Japanese skills to a proficient level.
