I chose to study Japanese because half of my family is from Japan. However growing up in Singapore, for the majority of my life I have not had any formal Japanese education. Therefore whenever I would go back to Japan, the communication between myself and my grandparents would be very limited. Additionally I visit Japan every year but due to my inability to speak fluently and to read or write at even a basic level, I find it very hard to get around by myself and to explore the depths of Japanese culture. Therefore when I came to Columbia, I decided that access to a world class education it would be best to make the best use of my resources. So in addition to my other interests, I took up Japanese. I'm most excited about being able to have more meaningful conversations with my grandparents and other Japanese family members. 日本に住（す）みたいですね。アメリカのお医者（いしゃ）さんは、日本で働（はたら）きたいなら(if)、日本語でmedical boardsを合格（ごうかく pass)しなければならないですね。自分（じぶん）のprivate practiceなら、アメリカの医師免許（いしめんきょ medical license)だけで大丈夫（だいじょうぶ）そうです。
